UTICA, N.Y. (Reuters/Zogby) October 23, 2000 - Nearly three-fourths of Americans believe that Palestinian refugees should be able to return to their homes in Israel, a recent Zogby America survey shows.
In a national telephone survey of 890 adults, 74% of respondents said they believe that the Palestinians should be allowed to return to their old homes if they choose.
The poll showed that 9.2% of respondents said they thought it would be better for the Palestinians to stay where they have relocated. Another 16.7% are unsure as to how they feel on the issue.
The survey found 74% of 18-29 year olds believe that Palestinians have the right to return to their homes in Israel, compared to the 68% of respondents over 65 years old.
This poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.4%.
What we asked: ``Israeli law holds that Jews from anywhere in the world have the right to come to Israel and become citizens of that state. However, since Israel was created in 1948, millions of Palestinians have become refugees. The UN passed a resolution saying that Palestinians have the right to return to their homes. Do you agree or disagree that Palestinians have this right to return?''
